Take Away Hunger Day Report

On Friday 24th September 2010 Feed the Hungry, in conjunction with Sydney's premiere Christian radio station Hope 103.2FM, held its first Take Away Hunger Day at the Church St Mall in Parramatta. Our mission was to ask people the question "What can you get with $6?"

A core group of dedicated people began the day in the early hours of the morning setting up tents and equipment, yet the task was not difficult with a beautiful spring day. We were soon joined by volunteers from the Salvation Army Church Auburn and C3 Silverwater Church. Almost 100 volunteers donned bright red shirts and twirled large golf umbrellas - both items printed with the message
"$6 provides 100 meals!" With enthusiasm, these volunteers began asking passersby's
"Would you like to help feed 100 children for just $6?"

What can you get for $6?

Many of the volunteers from the Salvation Army church were refugees at one stage themselves from Burundi and Sierra Leone. They were delighted to come down on Friday and help their family back home. Several of these volunteers were also interviewed by the radio station and shared their personal stories.

Our Feed the Hungry Director from Germany, Jean-Pierre Rummens, was also present on the day and shared many stories of his adventures with FTH. Jean-Pierre shared a particularly moving story of little Joe. An orphaned baby, left for dead, little Joe was discovered by the team near the border of Ethiopia.

At three months old, he was very sick and malnourished; his skin, so dry it was like sandpaper. Everyone had given up on him, including his guardian and his doctor, but the team believed for a miracle and travelled several hours to the Ugandan border to buy medicine and baby milk formula. Within a week the baby was out of danger and was expected to live.

"The most amazing thing was that, all that effort - a trip to buy milk and medicine, travelling to the hospital, buying food for the guardian cost only $20! The baby almost didn't make it for just $20!
I've never forgotten that story - and the lesson that so little can make such a big difference." remembers Jean-Pierre Rummens.

Take Away Hunger Day 2010
The atmosphere was charged with a festive air, thanks to performances by a group of Sierra Leone dancers, and songs by people from Burundi. Hope 103.2FM broadcasted their breakfast show, Mornings with Aaron & Dan, live from the Church St Mall amphitheatre from 6am through to 9pm. Aaron & Dan then hosted several Australian musical artists who were supporting the day: Zoe Elliot, Charlotte Jane, Planet of the Stereos and Mick Sykes who all entertained us with live musical performances.

Executive chef Simon Lawson, from Agape Organic Restaurant Bar in Sydney's Botany area, performed several cooking demonstrations during the day. Simon and his family own and run Australia's largest accredited organic restaurant, proudly supporting Australian farmers using the best bio-dynamic, certified organic, sustainable and natural produce. Something that is very close to Simon's heart is social justice, to make a difference in the lives of others.

"Throughout the world there is need... needs in our cities, nations and of course globally. We stand for a better world for our children and future generations." says Simon.

Simon has partnered with FTH with a personal goal to send One million meals to take away hunger! For every $6 donated on the Take Away Hunger Day, Simon graciously and generously matched that donation with a $20 voucher to enjoy a meal at his restaurant!

Glen donated $6 to help people less fortunate than him

A personal highlight of the day was meeting a homeless man named Glenn (pictured in the beanie) who gave $6 to help those less fortunate than him. Glen returned some time later to encourage us with a scripture from Psalms 41:1-3 - "How blessed is he who considers the helpless..."

It was wonderful to meet many new people who responded so enthusiastically and generously to our simple question "What can you get for $6?" It should have been no big surprise, who could resist the smiling and friendly faces of all our volunteers?

At the end of the day, when all the equipment was safely returned to their proper places, we began to tally the efforts of the day. Through the generosity of people like Glen, we were able to raise enough money to send 120,102 meals.

I want to express my sincere thanks to everyone who gave up their busy time to help us on the day.
On behalf of the hungry children around the world who will receive a hot meal because of your generosity, I extend my heartfelt appreciation and thankfulness.

You made the day a magnificent success!

Stefan Radelich's blog updated

Stefan Radelich, international director of Feed The Hungry and co-host of the Harvest Show updated his travel blog. Here is a snippet:

"Spent some time at the HHI Recovery Camp on the Love A Child compound... amazing to see the progress and impact that has been made in the lives of hundreds of severely injured people brought here literally since the earthquake struck two months ago.

Walking through the rows of jam-packed tents, I was favored to meet a beautiful princess named Emanuelle-- her photo graces this post.

Around the corner of a tent corridor she came, hobbling with her walker with a BIG smile and excited to try out her English on a 'blanc'. She saw the Bible that either Pete Sumrall, the President of Feed The Hungry was carrying, or the one sticking up out of the knee pocket of my cargo pants. It caught her attention like a moth to a flame cause right at the beginning of our conversation she brought it up & asked if she could have a 'Bibla'.

Emanuelle showed us to her tent... it was a long, s-l-o-w walk :-) and we got to learn a little about her...

Indonesian Testimony

Australian Missionaries to Indonesia, Colin and Kim Crago (pictured) sent this recent testimony from Java. FTH partnered with the Colin Crago to render relief in the aftermath of a May 2006 earthquake in their area. This is a work that is still bearing fruit today.
One of the Group, Ibu Tumiyem, a very poor lady who has been the recipient of various food distribution programmes, now a stalwart of the Church & prospering somewhat better, went to visit her parents.

When she got there they told her about the lady next door who was suffering from some sort of bone disese. She was a Christian & had prayed about her situation.

Ibu Tumiyem offered to pray for her & did. Immediately the pain ceased. There was a Muslim lady present who had a badly sore knee. Ibu Tumiyem prayed for her & she received healing straight away. Since then the Muslim lady has come to Ibu Tumiyem requesting healing for her son which Jesus honoured.

Prayer Day for Partners - Requests Sent!

Last month we invited our partners to send in their personal prayer requests into the office on the birthday of our founder - Dr. Lester Sumrall.

It has been the tradition of all the ministries started by Dr. Sumrall to make this request available.

We have collected all these tender prayer requests and sent copies to our US Head Office and to current FTH President, Peter Sumrall, who will visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem with your prayer request.

Thank you partners for sharing your hearts and allowing us the privilege to join in faith with you.

Haiti Disaster Relief - Field Report from Stefan Radelich

"Yesterday morning at dawn, we met up with one of our containers at the border & guided it in to our base at "Love-A-Child".

Met with Pastor Eddy Francois in Carrefour; this area of Port au Prince was devastated, 80% of the homes either destroyed or damaged beyond repair. Pastor Eddy's home was wrecked, he had 31 people living in his house and thankfully all survived. He is now in a tent along with 2,500 or so people living in the yard lot behind his house.

Our relief coordinator, Pastor Fernando Fleming of the Dominican Republic, started food & water distribution to these families the week after the earthquake. It was good to finally meet Eddy and many of the families living under nothing more than low-lying bedsheets strung together on sticks & poles.

We had a VERY orderly distribution of a week supply of rice & beans to each of the families... 2,500 people... it was a blessing to see the vision of FTH in action once again, feeding the hungry, strengthening the church, and reaching the lost.

Many of the families living in this makeshift tent city are members of Eddy's congregation, but the vast majority are not. They have seen God's love in action.

President Preval declared a three day time of fasting, prayer, and singing led by the Christian Church for the nation. The voodoo / witchcraft folks got really upset at that... and so did the few Muslims... but President Preval stood his ground.

May this be a historic turning time for the nation of Haiti, as it was for Nineveh in the days of Jonah. A nation can be saved in a day."

Stefan Radelich,
FTH International Director

Feed The Hungry Australia News

Welcome to the first blog entry from Feed The Hungry Australia.

Feed The Hungry is a non-profit Christian mission dedicated to three core activities: Feeding the Hungry; Disaster Relief and Supporting Orphanages.

Since 1987, we have supplied over $200 million dollars worth of food, milk, relief supplies and bibles to desperately needy people in 84 countries.

From it's conception, Feed The Hungry has focussed on bringing help to those in need both physically and spiritually. We do more than just feed empty bellies.

Because we work exclusively through local churches and ministries, each distribution also provides an opportunity to touch the spirit of those in need through prayer, encouragement, and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Whenever possible we also distribute Bibles to those receiving food packs. Physical food is temporal, but the Bread of Life can change life for eternity.

Feed The Hungry does not receive any money from the Government we rely totally on the support of people like you. You can be part of our vision. Help feed the hungry people from around the world who literally pray, "Give us this day our daily bread."
